The word 'dime' is
derived from the Latin word "decimus" which means
"one-tenth." President Roosevelt appears on the dime due to his
lifelong support of the March of Dimes. The organization raised money to find a
cure for Polio, which FDR suffered from since age 39. A cure has since been
found.
