In 2003, Niue became the world's first "WiFi
nation", where free wireless Internet access is provided throughout the
country by The Internet Users Society-Niue. People in Niue can get online
without having to sign up with an Internet provider. This is particularly
advantageous compared to using underground copper when you consider Niue’s
climate conditions. The saltwater, rain, and humidity could cause problems if
they weren’t all hooked up to WiFi. Also, tourists on yachts can connect to the
WiFi from their on-board computers.
